The South Cumberland Park Rangers and expert volunteers provide a range of guided interpretive activities, hikes, backcountry skills training and a few special programs like rappelling and canoeing.  There are also numerous programs just for kids (regardless of your age) and occasional work days for trail maintenance. The schedule is updated monthly.

Tree ID Field Guide

Meet at the Stone Door Ranger Station to make your own tree ID field guide. All materials will be supplied.

2:00 p.m.
Volunteer Day: Blue Hole Clean up/Swim Day

All volunteers welcome. Meet the Ranger at the Greeter Falls parking lot. We will have hands-on education on swimming area maintenance and safety. Afterwards, we will enjoy the swimming area at its best. Wear swimwear and proper hiking shoes. Bring water and a towel.

Rock Necklaces

Meet at the Stone Door Ranger Station to make your own nature necklace. All materials will be provided just bring your creativity.

2:00 p.m.
Make Your Own Terrarium/Aquarium

Meet Ranger Chase at the Stone Door Ranger Station. Please bring any empty 2 liter bottles you have at home. We will be making and decorating land or water containers for you to bring home and fill with your own fish, insects, or small critters.

Meet Ashlie at the Greeter Falls parking lot for a 1 mile guided hike to Blue Hole swimming area. Stay for a swim or follow us out for a quick hike. We will discuss native plants and animals that we come across and answer any questions. Bring water and proper hiking footwear (wear swimwear if desired).

Learn about the much maligned tick and its cousin the chigger. Meet at the Visitor’s Center. Ticks provided, bring your own chigger!

Scavenger Hunt

Meet at the Stone Door Ranger Station and test your detective skills by tracking down objects in the woods. All materials will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

2:00 p.m.
Volunteer Day: Exotic Invasive Plant Removal

All volunteers welcome. Meet the Ranger at the Stone Door office. We will have hands-on education on exotic invasive plant removal. Learn why, when, and how to remove the plants that are harming our native species. Please bring water and proper clothing. All tools used will be provided.

7:00 p.m.
Evening Meadow

The setting sun gives a brilliant backdrop to the meadow wildflowers. Meet Ranger Jason at the Visitor’s Center for this easy 1.5 mile walk.

Meet the Ranger at the Stone Door Ranger Station for a 2 mile guided hike to the Great Stone Door. We will discuss native plants and animals that we come across and answer any questions. Bring water and proper hiking footwear.

Soap Making

Meet the Ranger at the Stone Door Ranger Station. We will discuss traditional methods of soap making and demonstrate some easy ways to make soap at home with a few common household materials.

2:00 p.m.
Spiders
Meet the Ranger at the Stone Door Ranger Station to learn about native spiders. We will learn to identify native spiders, including dangerous ones. Craft supplies will be available for spider web art.

4:00 p.m.
Nature Hike - Boulders Crossing

Meet Seasonal Ranger Aaron at the Collins West parking lot for a strenuous 3-mile hike over beautiful, rocky terrain to view the Collins River and Suter Falls. Along the way we will identify some native trees and wildflowers. Bring water/snack and sturdy shoes. 

7:30 p.m.
Night  Canoe

Experience the peacefulness of Grundy Lakes at night and gaze at the stars reflected in the water. Meet at the Grundy Lakes main parking lot;  must bring flashlights. Call the Visitor’s Center to reserve space. Children will receive their very own glow stick for participation, but they must bring their parents with them.

Mountain Oak Loop Hike

Meet Seasonal Ranger Aaron at Savage Gulf Ranger Station for a difficult 10-mile hike that has some beautiful overlooks of Savage Gulf and our Big Tree trail. Pack your lunch, water, and wear sturdy shoes. This is an awesome trek for seasoned hikers only. 

2:00 p.m.
Aquatic Critter Detective

Hop in the creek at Grundy Forest to look for aquatic critters.  The rocks are slippery, so wear something you don’t mind getting wet. 

2:00 p.m.
Outdoor Preparedness

Meet Ranger Chase at the Stone Door Ranger Station. We will discuss a variety of supplies to bring with you on the trail, whether out for an hour or a week. We will also discuss and different survival methods, just in case you become stranded in the wilderness.

6:30  p.m.
Evening Canoe

Watch the sunset as you float gently in the lake. Meet at the Grundy Lakes main parking lot. Space and equipment are limited, so call the Visitor’s Center to reserve a space.

Ever wondered how bats find their food? Find out what it’s like to be a bat as you play this fun game! Meet at the Visitor’s Center.

Hike to Horsepound/Suter Falls

Meet Seasonal Ranger Aaron at the Collin's West parking lot for a strenuous 6-mile hike to see beautiful Horsepound and Suter Falls. This is a tough hike so bring plenty of water, a snack, and wear sturdy shoes.

Chalk Drawing

Meet at the Visitor’s Center pavilion to draw your favorite animal, etc.

4:30 p.m.
Hiker’s Challenge

Challenge yourself with the difficult Climber’s  Loop hike near Foster Falls. Meet in the Foster Falls parking lot, bring water and bug spray.

Amateurs and professionals alike will enjoy the amazing Stone Door as well as some gorgeous overlooks of the gulf. Easy 1 mile hike; paved most of the way except for the last few yards leading to the Stone Door and the second overlook.

Pinecone  Birdfeeders

Join us at the Stone Door Ranger Station to learn about our feathered friends and their role in the ecosystem while we make pinecone birdfeeders.

2:00 p.m.
Blue Hole Trash Cleanup

Come and lend a hand, care for your land.  Meet at the Greeter Falls parking lot  to take a walk down to the Blue Hole for a fun trash cleanup. Bring gloves, water and a bathing suit if you want to take a swim. Meet Seasonal Ranger Aaron at the Savage Gulf Ranger Station. We will be discussing native trees and making our own field guides. You will be able to take these with you to identify native trees around the park and around your home.

Come see the late Summer wildflowers that adorn the Meadow Trail. Meet Park Ranger Jason at the Visitor Center for an easy 1.5 mile stroll.

What is the Woolly Adelgid?

Meet Seasonal Ranger Aaron at the Grundy Forest parking lot for a moderate 2-mile hike. Along the trail are numerous old-growth Eastern Hemlock trees that left untreated could be destroyed by the Woolly Adelgid. We will discuss the insect's potential impact on our forests, and what can be done to minimize its impact in our area. Bring water/snack and wear sturdy shoes.

Dream Catchers

Meet at the Stone Door Ranger station to learn some Native American history while we create our own dream catchers.

Meet Ranger Chase at the Stone discussing water quality and show you how to make a water filter from common materials to prepare contaminated water for boiling and drinking.

Meet Seasonal Ranger Aaron at Savage Gulf picnic area for an informative talk for beginning backpackers. Come learn the essentials to a fun and successful trip in the backcountry.

Meet at the Stone Door Ranger Station to learn all about the Eastern Hemlock. We will discuss identification, taxonomy, survival uses, distribution, and threats from the Wooly Adelgid.  Learn what you can do to help an important part of our forest.

Sunset/Night Hike to Savage Falls

Meet Seasonal Ranger Aaron at the Savage Gulf Ranger Station for a moderate 4-mile hike to see beautiful Savage Falls. You  will get to experience the difference between night and day at the park. Bring water/snack, bug repellent, and wear sturdy shoes. Bring a headlamp or flashlight.
