Greetings,

A couple of quick news items for you:

February Activities Are Now Online

Planned activities at South Cumberland are now online at http://www.friendsofscsra.org/activities.htm

A Buggy Top Cave hike is planned for Thursday, February 7 starting at 1 PM.

There are no rappelling programs planned for February.

These two are among the favorite activities planned by the Rangers.  When they are on the list I will emphasize the opportunity!

More Woolly Adelgid Information Online

The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is proving fatal to hemlocks to our east.  Read this story posted to the Friends website a few days ago.  We are working on plans to protect as many hemlocks at South Cumberland as we can.  It's not going to be easy or cheap.  Learn more in preparation for upcoming volunteer activities to monitor these nefarious pests.

New Live Environmental News Feeds Online

Last week we added a new page to the Friends website which features three live environmental news feeds which automatically update every time Environment News Service, Environment News Network or Earthwire (UNEP-GRID-Arendal) climate change news update their feeds, which is at least once a day.  Visit the Friends web for the latest environmental news and information.

Water in the Park Update

Friends member and number one ace photographer Eric Dempsey reported several days ago that he hiked past Suter Falls in Collins Gulf and was delighted to hear the sound of falling water again at Suter.  The Park is still dry but water conditions are improving.  The forecast for the next week is calling for rain, rain mixed with snow and in the higher elevations of the Park we might get some snow that sticks and stays a while.  Get your camera ready.  Snow at South Cumberland makes for some spectacular photo ops.

Wildflowers in eight weeks?  It won't be long.

Cheers,

Ron Castle
